Geotoura - Hotel concept
When we include a hotel in our programme, it is not only a high standard of quality that is important to us. We prefer typical local accommodation, often boutique hotels with a special ambience. They emphasise the character of an individual trip: Panoramic views, particularly lovely furnishings, location in historic centres, no mass tourism and, of course, exceptionally friendly hosts – these are important criteria for us.
We categorise our accommodation in the British Isles into four separate Geotoura categories. Of course, you have the choice and can also combine the categories on one trip.
Boutique Hotels - Four categories
Encantador (‘Charming’): Privately run bed & breakfast guesthouses with a small number of cosy rooms and a lovingly prepared breakfast.
Especial (‘Special’): Enjoy stylish interiors and comfort in the mostly family-run boutique hotels with historic charm. Stay in the city centre or in beautiful natural surroundings.
Extraordinario (‘Extraordinary’): Centuries-old buildings, such as historic manor houses or castles, sometimes also modern design hotels with special architecture. Usually equipped with a restaurant, bar or spa area.
Luna de Miel (‘honeymoon’): For your honeymoon – or if you want to treat yourself to something out of the ordinary …
Character of this travel idea
The fascinating culture At the gateway to the Arctic
The culture of this northern Norwegian region is closely linked to life by and with the sea – and to the history of the Sámi, the indigenous people of northern Scandinavia. In Tromsø – also known as the ‘Gateway to the Arctic’ – museums, galleries and the famous Polar Museum bear witness to the long history of Arctic expeditions and scientific research. The Lofoten Islands, with their abundance of small art galleries, drying racks for stockfish and colourful rorbuer (former fishermen’s cabins), offer a lively insight into the coastal culture of northern Norway.
A quieter, almost contemplative aspect can be found on Vesterålen: here, alongside contemporary art, you will also find old whaling stories and local festivals that keep traditions alive. It is a culture that does not impose itself, but invites you to pause, marvel and understand.
Stunning nature in Northern Norway
The landscape between Tromsø, Lofoten and Vesterålen is like a living film: rugged rock formations, crystal-clear fjords, white sandy beaches – and, time and again, that special northern light. During the summer months, the midnight sun shines almost surreally over the horizon, while in winter, green and purple auroras dance across the sky.
The Lofoten Islands, with their towering mountain ranges and turquoise blue bays, are almost unreal in their beauty – this is particularly impressive at the famous Hauklandstranda, whose snow-white sandy beach has an almost Caribbean feel. In Vesterålen, the landscape opens up: rolling hills, vast moors and deep fjords characterise the landscape of this archipelago north of the Lofoten Islands. Thanks to its location near the continental shelf, whales can be observed here almost all year round: orcas, sperm whales and humpback whales can be observed particularly well in their natural environment here – an impressive experience in the middle of the Arctic Sea.
Cuisine in the North
Between the midnight sun and the northern lights, northern Norway offers cuisine that is deeply rooted in nature. On a tour of Tromsø, the Lofoten Islands and Vesterålen, you will encounter not only breathtaking landscapes but also a surprisingly diverse gastronomy. Fresh cod, freshly caught skrei or king crab from the Arctic Ocean land directly from the boat onto your plate – prepared in small, often family-run restaurants.
The small fishing villages of Lofoten offer honest, authentic cuisine: here, people eat what the sea has to offer – simple and authentic. In Vesterålen, farm cafés and small smokehouses invite visitors to enjoy unique culinary experiences. It is a region where food not only satisfies hunger, but also tells stories – stories about life in the far north.
Authentic experiences In the North of Norway
It is often the quiet, almost incidental moments that linger in the memory on a tour of Tromsø, Lofoten and Vesterålen: a boat trip in the late evening hours, when the light glides golden over the water, the silent gliding of snowshoes through freshly fallen powder snow – or the first flash of the Northern Lights in the night sky. In Tromsø, there are opportunities for whale watching during the winter months, and on the Vesterålen Islands even throughout the year – an unforgettable experience when orcas and humpback whales appear in the fjords.
