Geotoura - Hotel concept
When we include a hotel in our programme, it is not only a high standard of quality that is important to us. We prefer typical local accommodation, often boutique hotels with a special ambience. They emphasise the character of an individual trip: Panoramic views, particularly lovely furnishings, location in historic centres, no mass tourism and, of course, exceptionally friendly hosts – these are important criteria for us.
We categorise our accommodation in the British Isles into four separate Geotoura categories. Of course, you have the choice and can also combine the categories on one trip.
Boutique Hotels - Four categories
Encantador (‘Charming’): Privately run bed & breakfast guesthouses with a small number of cosy rooms and a lovingly prepared breakfast.
Especial (‘Special’): Enjoy stylish interiors and comfort in the mostly family-run boutique hotels with historic charm. Stay in the city centre or in beautiful natural surroundings.
Extraordinario (‘Extraordinary’): Centuries-old buildings, such as historic manor houses or castles, sometimes also modern design hotels with special architecture. Usually equipped with a restaurant, bar or spa area.
Luna de Miel (‘honeymoon’): For your honeymoon – or if you want to treat yourself to something out of the ordinary …
Character of this travel idea
Experience culture from vikings to fjord villages
The cultural facets of your tour through southern Norway unfold step by step along the route. Bergen, the first stop, with its colourful wooden houses in the Hanseatic quarter of Bryggen, provides an insight into the era of merchants and seafarers. This UNESCO World Heritage Site vividly recounts the history of trade along the North Sea – and remains the cultural heart of the city to this day.
In contrast, Gudvangen is a small village that surprises visitors with a lovingly reconstructed Viking village. Here you can experience the harsh life of times gone by – not as a museum, but as living history with workshops, boats and costumes. Smaller places such as Aurland and Geiranger also invite you to learn about Norwegian traditions and ways of life. These are quiet places where stories are still passed down orally – sometimes over a coffee with a view of the fjord.
Stunning nature: The power of the fjords
The landscape of southern Norway unfolds in a way that is almost unrivalled in its drama. Between Sognefjord and Geirangerfjord, between deep valleys and gentle waterfalls, a natural space reveals itself that needs no staging. Sognefjord – Norway’s longest and deepest fjord – seems almost surreal with its towering rock faces. Those who cross it in a small boat feel the power of nature up close.
At the Geirangerfjord, glacier waterfalls alternate with lush green mountain slopes, while high above, isolated farms cling to the hillsides. Particularly impressive is the drive along the winding Eagle Road with views of the emerald green water far below. And there are moments of tranquillity again and again – for example, at Aurlandsfjord or on a walk through the Flåm valley.
Experience the taste of Southern Norway
During a tour of southern Norway, you will encounter not only impressive landscapes, but also a surprisingly diverse range of culinary delights. The restaurants in Bergen reflect the abundance of fish on the coast – freshly caught cod, halibut and king crab are delivered directly from the boat to the kitchen. Those who prefer traditional fare will discover hearty specialities such as ‘raspeballer’ (potato dumplings) or smoked reindeer meat in small restaurants around the Sognefjord.
Particularly charming is the combination of modern Nordic influences and centuries-old recipes. In Flåm, for example, a small brewery surprises visitors with strong ales and local snacks – ideal after a hike with fjord views. And in the fjord villages, you will find farms offering goat’s cheese, jams and apple cider in a family atmosphere. Anyone on a culinary journey through southern Norway will soon discover that the flavours of this region are as clear and powerful as its nature.
Experience Norway don´t just see it
What makes this tour of southern Norway so special are the encounters – with people, places and moments. A trip on the world-famous Flåm Railway, for example, is more than just a means of transport: it is a journey through time and space, from the high plateaus down to the water, past thundering waterfalls and lonely farmsteads. Where better to feel the power of the majestic fjords than on the water? On a boat trip, you can marvel at the impressive landscapes from what is probably the most beautiful and spectacular perspective.
