Ilona Hensel
A child's wish is the beginning of unforgettable dreams

“I fell in love with Spain because it is so much more than just the fine sandy beaches that everyone knows – and loves. In its major cities, I can trace the great seafaring nation, the Moorish era and many other events. There is the Sagrada Familia, the Alhambra, the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela … and so much more.

And just a stone’s throw away, there is often almost untouched, sometimes rugged nature that I could wander through for hours. For me, Spain is also the home of a slightly different story that lives on with every white, round windmill: Don Quixote. This colourful journey through so many facets is simply fun – and I’m sure you will too. By the way: your journey begins at home. Depending on where you are departing from, we will also plan and organise the route and your accommodation in the transit countries until you reach your destination.“

landkarte spanien

Discover the country in an authentic way during your individual Spain tour in a hire car or in your own car. We will take you to hidden places in a lush and varied Spain. We let you savour countless culinary highlights, such as tapas/pintxos and wine, gazpacho and paella, churros and café con leche.

Experience the intoxicating south in Andalusia with the fairytale Alhambra, fiery Flamenco, majestic horses and their proud riders. Feel the tranquillity and slowness of life in the “Pueblos Blancos” (“White Villages”). Hike in Sierra de Grazalema or Sierra Nevada. We reveal beaches away from mass tourism on the Costa del Sol and the Costa de la Luz.

Central Spain, the northern Mediterranean coast and Extremadura also have their very own charm. Here you will find contrasts that could hardly be greater: Royal Madrid and its eternal Catalan counterpart Barcelona with Ramblas and the Sagrada Familia – these vibrant cities stand in stark contrast to the tranquillity and almost endless expanse of Extremadura on the border with Portugal.

Almost still an insider tip is Northern Spain: Experience the cultural metropolis of Bilbao, the vibrant gourmet scene of San Sebastian, dreamy coastal towns and the Alpine Picos de Europa. Feel the spiritual vastness of Cantabria, Asturias and Galicia before you reach the place of longing, Santiago de Compostela.

Tips for your journey through Spain.

Driving in Spain

As a rule, the driver of a hire car in Spain must be at least 21 years old. For higher vehicle classes, a minimum age of 23 or even 25 years may be required. It is also possible that a minimum driving experience is required. Depending on the provider and the vehicle class rented, this varies between one year and five years. Please note: You will not be able to rent a hire car without a credit card and the corresponding PIN code.

Driver's licence

It is possible to hire a car in Spain with a German driving licence without any problems. The national driving licences of EU member states and Switzerland are recognised in Spain. Of course, the driving licence must be valid. Therefore, please check the expiry date in good time before travelling.

Traffic rules in Spain

In Spain, as in Germany, legal relations apply. This also applies to Gibraltar, which is under British administration. On roundabouts, vehicles in the roundabout have right of way. If you want to leave a multi-lane roundabout immediately at the next exit, you should use the outside lane. If you only want to leave the roundabout or turn at the third exit, you should choose the inside lane and only indicate and change to the outside lane before exiting. Vehicles in the outside lane must be given right of way.

Tolls on motorways

If you are travelling around Spain on the privately operated Autopistas (AP), you have to pay a toll based on the distance travelled. You can pay by credit card or cash at the toll stations; prepaid credit cards and EC cards are not accepted. The state-run Autovias (A) and the urban motorways and bypasses, on the other hand, are often toll-free.

Parking rules in Spain

If you park on public roads, you will usually have to pay a parking fee. Please note: Yellow lines indicate parking bans, as do signs with the words 'Prohibido aparcar' (no parking). Blue lines indicate that parking is only permitted for a limited time - always for a fee. White markings indicate that parking is free of charge. Green markings indicate residents' car parks. Avoid parking directly in the city centre - the available parking spaces here are scarce and in most cases subject to a charge.

Speed limits

A limit of 30 km/h applies within built-up areas and 20 km/h on single-lane roads without markings in the centre. On roads with 2 or more lanes in each direction, a speed limit of 50 km/h applies in built-up areas. Outside built-up areas, a maximum of 90 km/h is permitted, and 120 km/h on motorways.
