Cultures in a vast landscap

10 days Extremadura tour

Hervás - Cáceres - Llerena - Guadalupe - Toledo

Your journey at a glance

The white windmills with their huge wings may remind you a little of a certain Don Quixote, who is said to have once fought against them. Admittedly, the knight of the sad figure was travelling somewhere else. But that doesn't make the mills in the vast landscape of Extremadura any less fascinating. They are just as much a part of this region as its fortresses, monasteries and palaces. In between, you drive your hire car on this 10-day round trip through Extremadura through a varied, still very unspoilt landscape. Silence is often your reliable companion here.

Geotoura – Hotel concept

When we include a hotel in our programme, it is not only a high standard of quality that is important to us. We prefer typical local accommodation, often boutique hotels with a special ambience. They emphasise the character of an individual trip: Panoramic views, particularly lovely furnishings, a location in historic centres, no mass tourism and, of course, exceptionally friendly hosts – these are important criteria for us.

We divide our hotels into four separate Geotoura categories. Of course, you have the choice and can also combine the categories on one trip.

Boutique Hotels – Four categories

Encantador (“Charming”): Our most affordable option. Lovingly furnished rooms that offer everything the discerning traveller expects.

Especial (“Special”): Hotels with a special ambience – historic palaces, monasteries, haciendas or beach hotels with exceptional charm. Perfect for the classic cultural tour.

Extraordinario (“Extraordinary”): Luxurious hotels in excellent locations and with the highest level of comfort, often in centuries-old aristocratic palaces, old oil mills or haciendas.

Luna de Miel (“honeymoon”): For the honeymoon – span. Luna de miel – or if you want to treat yourself to something out of the ordinary …

Character of this travel idea

From Madrid, you embark on a wonderful adventure under the Spanish sun, which will not only show you famous stages such as the capital itself and Toledo. Picturesque old towns such as Cáceres or the picturesque provincial town of Zafra are also waiting to surprise you with their beauty. Beyond the city limits, the tranquil expanse of Extremadura awaits you. This personalised round trip is a combination of excitement and relaxation.

Experience culture

You can’t miss the Royal Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe when visiting the city. The imposing building in the Gothic Mudejar style stretches far above the roofs of the surrounding houses. As impressive as this monastery is when you stand at the foot of the steps in front of the entrance, the works of art inside are just as impressive. Here, the eye hardly knows where to look first.

In contrast, the picturesque cloisters that line the garden in the inner courtyard are the perfect place to relax. The Casa El Greco in Toledo’s Jewish quarter seems almost inconspicuous next to it. For art lovers, however, it is at least as impressive a treasure, as you can trace the famous artist here on this 10-day round trip in a hire car.

Discover not only the works of art, some of which appear almost obtrusively contemporary, but also the many facets of the artist behind them.

Experience nature

The tranquil expanse of Extremadura is pure relaxation. Stroll through the light, Mediterranean forests. Hike through meadows and pastures or settle down by one of the clear lakes. You can hike through fertile, green valleys and impressive mountain slopes in the Sierra de Gata, among other places.

This corner of Spain is a landscape of contrasts and diversity. Where you park your hire car and set off on your 10-day round trip through Extremadura is entirely up to you. In any case, there is a large selection of fantastic postcard panoramas.

Central Spain - hearty delicious

The cuisine of central Spain is hearty, meaty and extremely tasty. Stews such as cocido madrileño or pisto manchego and soups such as sopa de ajo are typical dishes and can be found on many menus. If you like garlic, you shouldn’t miss out on champiñones al ajillo – a classic of Castilian cuisine, as the bulb is produced here in large quantities, not only in white, but also in purple and, in the province of Cuenca itself, in black.

Not only is the world-famous Manchego cheese of high quality, but also the olive oil and the saffron grown here. The region’s wines are also better than their reputation, as a great deal has been invested in modernising the cellars and vineyards – with success. Other delicacies include the famous Serrano ham and, of course, the skilfully grilled and braised meat dishes. Meatless dishes, such as parillada de verdura or el asadillo, are also on the menu and with wild mushrooms and asparagus, the menu becomes a definitive culinary experience.

No sea in sight and you still have an appetite for fish? Then you should order bacalao al ajo arriero or tiznao manchego. For a sweet finish, you should look out for a tipsy sponge cake, bizcochos borrachos, honey cake from Cuenca, alajú, or bizcocho or torta de Alcázar.

If your round trip through central Spain takes you through Toledo, marzipan is a must, as this is where the country’s most famous producers are to be found. Is your round trip taking you to or through Extremadura? Then you have landed in a paradise of culinary specialities while passing through. Here you will not only find the Ibérico Bellota of the acorn-fed and grass-fed Pata Negra, but also a large number of dishes with river fish and flavoursome cheeses such as the Torta del Casar. Together with a good wine, they are perfect for a picnic in the countryside. The lamb, kid and game dishes, subtly flavoured with pimentón de la vera, will also make your mouth water.

The authentic Extremadura

In the Monfragüe National Park, not far from Cáceres, you can immerse yourself in a Mediterranean paradise: ancient cork and holm oaks, gently rolling hills and mountain slopes of grey rock reaching for the sky, covered in green islands. In between, the calm waters of the Tagus and Tiétar creep leisurely towards the sea.

Rare black storks, majestic griffon vultures and giant royal owls circle above you. This landscape is simply beautiful to dream about. So sit down at the edge of the path, close your eyes and savour the scents and the silence of the landscape.

Our trip to Extremadura was wonderfully organised by Geotoura! I felt very well looked after and informed (even during the pandemic with rebooking of hotels and flights and the special conditions). The hotels were magnificent and I have warm memories of the cities.

A wonderful journey through the Extremadura for people who want to take it easy, manageable driving routes, very calming due to the uniformity of the landscape. Without knowledge of foreign languages it can be difficult in the countryside. Suggestions and support were excellent. I would therefore travel with Geotoura again at any time.

A great round trip starting from Madrid to the north coast of Spain to Santiago de Compostella and back to Madrid - the weather was just perfect during the last two weeks of June - sunny but not hot, no beach holiday just sightseeing, hiking and culinary delights - Madrid would certainly be worth an extra trip - that was our conclusion and we were already a bit tired of sightseeing! We can only recommend this trip through northern Spain!
